Let’s talk about constraint – it removes freedom, but within that restriction it liberates you. Sonnets are 14 lines. Haikus: 5 syllables, 7 then 5. It’s never about constraining yourself; it’s about expressing yourself within that – liberating you through limitation.
101px lets you create a string, nothing more. 32 colours. 100 dots. All represented as a short ~135 character expression that lives in the URL. Zero accounts – ever. That’s the goal. Just draw, share, and if you are proud of your creation – submit it! That’s what the gallery is for.
codec.js
encode(indices) // 100 palette indices (0–31) -> ~135-char stringdecode(str) // string -> 100 indices, back on the grid
By nature, it is limited. But functionally – limitless… Well virtually. Let’s talk cardinality – there are about 10⁸⁰ atoms in the known universe. But well over 10¹⁵⁰ permutations of pixels that can be made on this little grid. Virtually unlimited; yet undoubtedly restrained.
Most tools grow more capable until the interesting part gets buried. 101px will always be interesting, because there was never any capability to bury it under to begin with.
Instant gratification takes too long. So why not make a 10×10 haiku – a little gratification you can agonize over?
